Your career to date?
I began working for the investment arm of a leading Merchant bank, Robert Fleming as an investment adviser. However I realised that independent advice was less restrictive for me and for clients so I decided to join Berkeley Asset Management in 1992.
After a wonderful 10 years there I needed a change so I accepted an offer to join my current company Honister Partners. Almost 10 years on and this decision has certainly proven to be one of my best.
I am very proud of what I do, my clients have a 1-1 relationship with me. This close relationship is what I find to be the most rewarding part of my job.
What do you specialise in?
Investments and Pensions
If you could offer one piece of financial advice to an individual, what would it be and why?
If you spend more than you earn its a recipe for disaster and a very bad habit. Debt is an easy place to get to but a very difficult place to leave!
Which areas of financial planning do you feel an individual should be addressing in the next 2 years?
Debt repayment-especially credit cards.
Protection- insure what's important to you i.e. income, your life etc. You may not have the chance to do this later if health fails or worse! Do it now and don't cut corners on the really important stuff.
What is the most common mistake you find individuals make in financial planning?
Not doing any!! Most just buy a product or get sold a product. That comes later firstly clients need to think about what they want, what they dont want, whats important to them, what concerns they have for their future, what happens to their family and business if they are not here tomorrow etc.
As an independent financial adviser what, for you, are the main benefits of being a part of Honister Partners Ltd?
Strength in numbers and clients knowing that if I'm not here their affairs will be well taken care of by a suitably qualified colleague.
